"Allergies are harmless!"
Allergies are serious chronic diseases and should therefore never be described as harmless. It is not uncommon for a "harmless hay fever" to turn into allergic asthma, as allergies usually worsen steadily if left untreated.
In addition, various cross-allergies (for example to various foods such as fruit, nuts, fruit or spices) can develop from the original illness.
Within a few minutes or seconds, anaphylaxis, the extreme form of an allergic reaction, can also have life-threatening consequences. In the worst case, it can lead to circulatory shock and cardiovascular failure. Various media outlets have even reported more than 2,500 deaths per year in Germany alone.
What are the most common airborne allergens?
In the case of an allergy, the human immune system reacts hypersensitively to mostly harmless substances to which it is exposed through breathing, among other things.
The most common airborne allergens, which we will discuss in more detail below, are pollen, house dust, animal hair, contact allergens such as fragrances or molds.
Experts estimate that in just a few years, more than 50% of all Europeans will be affected by one of these allergic diseases.
The pollen allergy
About 15% of all adults in Germany will be diagnosed with hay fever in the course of their lives. Women are affected slightly more often than men. Around 9% of children are currently affected by a pollen allergy.
The following pollen count calendar (source: WetterOnline) provides an overview of the most common pollens and when they occur:
As can be clearly seen in the graphic, we are exposed to a wide variety of pollen in Germany almost all year round. For example, these enter your home through open doors and windows, but also through your clothing

The house dust allergy
In the case of a house dust allergy, those affected do not react to the dust itself, but to the excrement of the house dust mite. These tiny creatures can be found wherever dust accumulates. Carpets, bedding and soft toys in particular are a paradise for house dust mites.
Experts estimate that there are an average of 1,000 mites and 250,000 mite excrement balls in a teaspoon of bedroom dust. While the mites themselves tend to stay on the ground, their excrement balls fly around in the air we breathe due to their tiny size. For house dust allergy sufferers, inhaling them leads to a reaction of the immune system, which manifests itself in frequent sneezing, a runny nose, swollen and watery eyes and a general, severe feeling of tiredness. Usually developed in childhood and adolescence, a house dust allergy lasts a lifetime.

The animal hair allergy
The symptoms of animal hair allergy are similar to those of pollen and house dust allergy. It often results in burning or itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing.
As with house dust allergies, it is not the animal hair itself that triggers the physical defense reactions, but proteins from the animal's bodily fluids (such as saliva) that are found on it.
Even if allergy sufferers are advised to do without their own four-legged friend for the sake of their health, love of animals often prevails.
Regular vacuuming and cleaning of all surfaces can only contribute to a lasting improvement in symptoms with difficulty, as the triggers are constantly present in the air.

The contact allergy
If reactions occur to certain substances such as fragrances from detergents or cleaning agents, plants, cosmetics, deodorants, perfume, adhesives, essential oils and much more, this is known as a contact allergy, which affects around 8% of all adults.
About 10% of all occupational illnesses are caused by a contact allergy. Hairdressers, beauticians and office workers of all kinds are particularly affected.
In the case of a contact allergy, an allergic reaction often only becomes apparent days later. It is therefore usually difficult to identify the original trigger.

The mold allergy
Molds can be found almost everywhere. They love moisture and warm temperatures. Not only food is affected by mold, but also walls, window frames, carpets and even potted plants. Mold multiplies continuously through airborne mold spores.
A mold allergy usually manifests itself through typical cold symptoms, including shortness of breath. In particularly severe cases, it can trigger allergic asthma. The allergic reaction occurs when the microscopic spores floating in the air are inhaled and come into contact with the human mucous membranes.
